Description
A remote village high in the Himalayas on the road to Ladakh, India. The terrain is impossibly rugged...Alexander the Great abandoned his plans to conquer India for this reason. Actually his troops decided crossing the Upper Indus was a river too far. Even today it is a true adventure to get to this place., which required two hard days of bus travel on the tour group I led. After leaving our houseboats on Dal Lake in Srinigar we followed the Upper Indus River through the Himalayas, camping in a lovely meadow midway. The road itself was mainly gravel and often impossibly scary. There are many places with no curb and a one mile drop to the river!
Ladakh borders Tibet to the east, the Lahaul and Spiti to the south, the Vale of Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west, and the trans-Kunlun territory of Xinjiang to the far north. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture. It is sometimes called "Little Tibet" as it has been strongly influenced by Tibetan culture.
