In this classic tale of innocents destroyed by evil, the mockingbird comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. The updated bird is the proverbial canary in the American coal mine. Recent events shout out that its death is frighteningly near. The canary exposes the fragility of democracy when prejudice, myth, and misinformation go unchecked. It is wrong and a sin to kill a mockingbird or canary. And I am filled with dread and sadness....
