Description
The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower that peaks yearly around August 12th. The meteors are called the Perseids because the point from which they appear to originate lies in the constellation Perseus. The stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift–Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 133-year orbit. The meteors, varying in size from a grain of sand to a marble, are traveling at well over 133,000 mph and their streak of light is caused by friction with the earth's atmosphere, causing them to burn up.
